>> Multidisciplinary Approach

Collaborating with other talented specialists is integral to providing the best patient care. This is especially true for musculoskeletal tumors which often require a multi-disciplinary approach both fordiagnosis and treatment. Correctly diagnosing the problem involves collaboration with radiologists and pathologists.

Twice monthly conferences ("tumor boards") are held at Virginia Hospital Center to discuss upcoming and post-operative patients. These are invaluable to confirming diagnoses and in planning the course of treatment among the different specialists.

Treatment for malignant tumors usually is done in collaboration with medical and radiation oncologists. Children with malignant tumors are treated in conjunction with pediatric oncologists.

>> Musculoskeletal Specialists

Diagnosis is made in conjuction with radiologists and pathologists. When a biopsy is performed, it is reviewed in the context of the radiology images before making final determination of diagnosis. The use of chemotherapy or radiation for selected patients is often decided jointly among the various specialists. For this reason, regular conferences among clinicians serve an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
